“I am not a number” is written by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer and is illustrated by Gillian Newland. This book is based on a true story and took place near Nipissing Ontario. “I am not a number” depicts the tragedy of the Canadian residential school system. It is told through the eyes of eight-year-old Irene, an Anishnaabe girl who was taken from her family and placed in a residential school. This book is useful in teaching about the residential school system and helps to facilitate conversations around some of the issues challenging First Nations Metis and Inuit communities today. This book is recommended for grades 4-6. If you like this book, you will also enjoy the book “Not my girl,” which is written by Christy Jordan-Fenton.
