The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery

Written by Antoine De Saint-Exupery in the 1920’s, The Little Prince is a wonderful story about the mysterious encounter between a pilot stuck in the Sahara Desert and a Little Prince from Asteroid 325.

After leaving his planet in search for happiness, the Little Prince visits six other planets before landing on Earth where he meets a pilot, also the narrator, trying to repair his plane. They become friends and the Prince tells the narrator about his planet as well as recounting his journey to neighbouring planets where he encountered a strange world of narrow minded grown-ups; Allowing the reader to reflect further on society’s  obsession with wealth, power, work, fast-paced living , aesthetics and even constructing knowledge.  Although, while on Earth, the Little Prince  connects with a Fox who teaches him the importance of looking with your heart and not your eyes, ultimately leading the Little Prince back to his home planet to tend to his rose.

My favourite part of this book are the running themes of love and friendship. It allowed me, as an adult, to seriously reflect on what is truly important in life. We, as adults, tend to get caught up in the surface level aspects of the world,  that we forget about looking beneath the surface for understanding.  This book challenges the reader to see the true beauty of people and things.  The book shows how love and the time you spend with someone, not money for example, gives meaning to all existence.  The Little Prince is also great because it is open for interpretation and any reader can take from it what they need.

A must read for all adults!

  1. Great review of the book! I have read and loved this book as well. I also think that it’s a great book for exploring themes on life and friendship, especially with so many meaningful quotations to draw from. There’s also an animated movie adaptation of the book too, which I also watched and found to be really good at recounting the story and its messages.
